Due to the tremendous lifestyle changes that are entailed by the vision loss created by macular degeneration, there is significant interest in treatment options for the condition. It is important, however, to present a realistic view of the treatments available. For many, if not most, conditions, treatment is equated with a cure, control, or genuine improvement of a condition. When dealing with macular degeneration these expectations are inappropriate. With one exception, treatments for this condition are aimed at either slowing the loss of vision or preserving existing vision.
